Heat Guns

It’s all about heat guns for this week’s blog post. A heat gun, often referred to as a hot air blower, is a must-have tool for professionals, crafts people and DIY masters. Heat guns are commonly known for their use to strip paint and weld or bend plastics. However, these handy tools are so much more versatile than just plastic welding tools.

A heat gun is a device used to emit a stream of hot air, usually at temperatures between 100 °C and 550 °C (200-1000 °F), with some hotter models running around 760 °C (1400 °F), which can be held by hand. Heat guns usually have the form of an elongated body pointing at what is to be heated, with a handle fixed to it at right angles and a trigger, in the same general layout as a handgun, hence the name.

The two most popular types of heat gun are differentiated by how they are powered. Gas heat guns are less frequently used but do benefit from being cordless, while electric heat guns are the most popular option. Although they are more restrictive in that they have a cord, they are much safer and can be adapted with extension cords.

With temperatures ranging from 100-600° Celsius, heat guns can tackle a range of jobs with ease. Typically, people use heat guns for removing paint and wallpaper, heating and bending plastics and softening glue and adhesive. They’re also useful for thawing frozen pipes in the winter and for shrink wrapping, working much faster than a standard hair dryer.

Amongst the more standard uses, there are some surprising things you can use a heat gun for. Removing dents, restoring trims on your car and even cooking bacon – heat guns can assist you with almost anything! So, the next time you fancy some roasted coffee, you could make your own with your heat gun, saving time and money.
