For securing timber to steel without the timber rising to the top of the screw while the metal is being drilled.

The wings drill a slightly larger hole in the timber to prevent the threads engaging, and once the screw makes contact with metal, the wings break off, enabling the threads to engage the metal and secure the wood firmly.
