Metalworking processes and machinery

Welcome back to our blog. This week’s blog post is all about metalwork and metalworking machinery. Metalworking is the process of shaping and reshaping metals to create useful objects, parts, assemblies, and large scale structures.

Modern metalworking processes can be categorized into three different broad areas: forming, cutting, or joining processes.

Cutting: cutting is a collection of processes where material is brought to a specified shape by removing excess using various kinds of tooling

Forming: forming modifies metal by deforming it i.e. forming does not remove any metal.  Forming is done with a system of mechanical forces and, especially for bulk metal forming, with heat

Joining: joining brings two or more pieces of metal together by way of one or more different processes which include welding, brazing and soldering

Modern metalworking workshops, typically known as machine shops, hold a wide variety of specialized or general-use machine tools capable of creating highly precise, useful products. Many simpler metalworking techniques, such as blacksmithing, are no longer economically competitive; these may be performed as individual hobbies or historical reenactments.

The oldest archaeological evidence of copper mining and working was the discovery of a copper pendant in northern Iraq from 8,700 BCE.[2] The earliest substantiated and dated evidence of metalworking in the Americas was the processing of copper in Wisconsin, near Lake Michigan.

Here, at ProWeld Ireland we stock a wide variety of metalworking machinery such as quality pillar drills, bandsaws, chopsaws, bench grinders, pipe bending & cutting, hydraulic punching and chamfering.

One such product is the Wet/Dry Bench Grinder. The 8 slow speed wet grinding wheel Is perfect for a finer finish.

It’s constructed of a robust metal housing and weighing 11kg (24lbs), this bench grinder has been built for reliability and smooth operation. The heavy duty motor of the grinder delivers 373 watts (0.5 hp) of power, offering 125 (wet) + 3000 (dry) RPM. Suitable for garage or workshop environments, the grinder offers the capability of dealing with every type of grinding and sharpening job.

Costs €101.07

Another product is the SIP Bench Pillar Drill B16-12 375w. 16mm Drilling capacity (Steel).

– 3 – 16mm Chuck capacity

It’s a professional pillar drill with magnetic NVR switch. Features aluminium motor housing for improved cooling and sturdy cast iron table with slots and easy lock motor adjustment.

Covered by a 2 year motor warranty

Costs €303.42

We also have a fantastic selection of pipe bending & cutting tools such as pipe benders, hydraulic pipe benders, pipe cutters and pipe threading sets

The RIDGID Pipe Bender 3/8 To 2 Inch are versatile and portable benders. It’s perfect for on-site bending as well as machine construction, boiler making and general industrial applications.

The 36518 is a single circuit hydraulic system with spring return which enables the ram to be advanced in controlled stages permitting easy and precise bending of the pipes and fast withdrawal of the piston.

The special safety system of the Ridgid Hydraulic Pipe Bender protects the hydraulic circuit from over-pressurisation. Supplied in a wooden case and delivered with a set of bending formers to accommodate different pipe sizes.
