This week’s blog post will focus on spanners and wrenches, their uses and some amazing products we sell at ProWeld.
Firstly, the spanner is a hand-held tool used to provide grip and tighten or loosen fasteners. It gives a mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects. The tool is used in turning rotary fasteners like nuts and bolts. Spanners are made of a metal shaft with a profile opening on one end. The profile head, or the jaw, is the part that fits over, around or into the fastener to grip it.
From home repair jobs to assembling furniture or any kind of DIY project, the combination spanner can assist in a wide variety of applications. This useful tool is a must-have in every household and workshop.
How does a spanner work?
The profile of the head (size and shape) fits over, around or into the fastener. When the head is turned, friction (a force that slows down two objects moving past one another) between the profile and the fastener at the contact points causes the spanner to mechanically grip the fastener, providing torque (a turning force) to turn it.
Grab the handle and turn on same plane as nut to turn the nut. To turn the tool, the shaft needs to be turned on the same plane as the fastener. The user does this by gripping the shaft and pulling or pushing it.
Spanners use a lever system to increase the amount of work that can be done. The shaft acts as a lever, magnifying the force input by the user in order to turn the fastener easily.

Wrenches
Wrenches are made in various shapes and sizes and are used for gripping, fastening, turning, tightening and loosening things like pipes, pipe fittings, nuts and bolts. There are basically two major kinds of wrenches:
Pipe wrenches are used in plumbing for gripping round (cylindrical) things.
General use wrenches used on nuts and bolts that have flat, parallel surfaces; e.g., square or hexagonal (hex). When using a wrench, pull it toward you rather than pushing it away. This gives you more control and reduces the chance of injury if the wrench slips.
We sell 2 different Pipe Wrenches which we have in malleable cast or aluminium.
